About Us
Organization Background
ZACOP was established in July 2004 by the Bishops Council. Its primary objective is to reduce morbidity and mortality due to major public health problems and improve the socio-economic status of Zambia's vulnerable households and communities by broadening service provision beyond the public sector facilities. It is the official developmental arm of the church that seeks to coordinate the national efforts of poverty reduction and development based on non-state actors and to work in partnership with the Zambian government and other stakeholders to attain improved and sustained social sector development.
ZACOP has a Board of Trustees as a policy-making organ. Its daily operations are managed by a management team headed by the Executive Director. The Outreach Unit has a presence in all 10 provinces. It is involved in Malaria Prevention and Control, Maternal and Child Health, Cross border malaria prevention initiatives, HIV and AIDS prevention including Home Based Care, Support to OVC and people living with HIV/AIDS, Food Security, Adult Functional Literacy, Income Generation Activities, Skills and Crafts Training, Child Survival, Gender and Governance and Development, Water and Sanitation, Early Childhood Care Development and Education (ECD), Church Community Mobilisation Process and Sustainable Agriculture and Small Livestock development.
The Anglican Church has been present in Africa since the mid-nineteenth century, with early colonial churches establishing schools and hospitals as part of their mission. Christian mission hospitals still provide 30% to 40% of total health care provision in most sub-Saharan nations, especially in remote and isolated locations. The Anglican Church, itself, accounts for 25% of that figure. The most important aspect of the Anglican Church is its delivery system that reaches the most vulnerable populations.
ZACOP has achieved several milestones. The successful projects include the Nets for Life, Adult Functional Literacy Training, Gender and Governance with development, Food Security Project, Livelihood support and HIV/OVC Support and now the Early Childhood development program. The success has been scored through teamwork and strong partnerships with the various local and international development agencies partnering in development programmes in the country which has earned ZACOP recognition by the Government as evidenced through the award of a certificate of excellence in 2008 as appreciation for its exceptional leadership and valuable contribution to the fight against malaria in Zambia.
Furthermore, ZACOP has been awarded an opportunity to sit on national coordinating committees such as the National Malaria monitoring and evaluation committee, the National Committee for review of educational materials for adult literacy and now the newly formed National coordinating committee for Early Childhood Development ratified by the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Education.
